Jorejick Family house

The purpose of the project is to increase the quality of family life, creating comfortable and enjoyable spaces for the daily activities of each member while taking in consideration their social and cultural conditions.

Efficient low-cost architecture was a strong requirement, so the project creates the most spaces/life improvements with the least elements possible and applies each material in its most efficient way, ensuring the durability of the construction and a reliable long-term investment.

The project settles in the narrow and private side of the land, where several shades and gathering places were located previously.

The centre of the 3 main trees is the centre of the project, where the main shade element and fireplace are projected. From there, 3 different volumes emerge, each representing the 3 main parts of the program suited for the family.

The living room and kitchen are the two smaller volumes at the entrance side, the most public areas of the project, where social gathering, studying, and cooking takes place. The longer volume accommodates the bedrooms and expands to the east side becoming more private along the way and finishing with a bigger bedroom. Each smaller bedroom is equipped by a bunk bed with a vertical double window and a study place.

Each of these 3 volumes is then expanded with a shade element, which creates the relation between all gathering spaces and doubles the usable area of the project. This shade element efficiently provides permanent welfare to perform all kind of activities in a tropical climate. It is the space quality with the biggest design impact of the project as we believe it to be the key to this family’s life quality.

All the construction has a proper foundation which ensures the integrity of all elements. The walls are done with adobe bricks and clay plaster which are the most efficient cost/yield way to build a wall, providing mechanical stability and improving the building thermal inertia.

The roof is elevated with a wooden structure, providing great ventilation which is the most incisive factor in climate control, especially in tropical climates. Considering that access to water is one of the most important factors to create health conditions in non-developed African countries, the roof was designed efficiently to harvest the maximum amount of rainwater at the level of the ring beam, providing pressured water to all the necessary areas in the project.
